CORE for Washington News!

Exciting news from the CORE for Washington! We are growing by leaps and bounds! At Kirkland Chapter's last lmeeting, a member made a motion that Kirkland Chapter become a member of the CORE!  It was passed and they became CORE member number 176!!!!  How cool is that?  Our 1st entire Chapter!

Now, the fun begins! We would like to issue a challenge to all Chapters to sign up for the CORE and to have as many of your individual members sign up too! Sad News

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that George Mauel of Centralia Chapter passed away last night (9-9). He was a fantastic escort for his wife, Leora, Grand Martha, during the Portrait Grand year. They both had a connection to my parents for many years. George has not been well for awhile. I know he is now in a better place.
Please keep Leora and their daughters, Lora & Georgia and the rest of the family in your prayers.

Sad News - Passing of Frances Gottner

My dearest Frances passed-on this morning, Labor Day 9/6/10. She died peacefully without pain. We met in high school in Santa Monica, California and were married on October 17, 1947. We were initiated together into Eastern Star in La Sierra Chapter in Fresno, Calif, in February 1966. Sister Frances and I served together twice in the East in Omega Chapter in Des Moines, WA. in 1978 -1979 and 1988 -1989.

She gave me outstanding support as we traveled for several years with the Grand Lodge team all over Washington, and she assisted the wives of two Grand Masters by leading the indoctrination sessions for the ladies of the Grand Lodge teams for those two years

She served as a Deputy Instructor for WGM Loretta Ketner, Westside Chairman of the Deputies for WGM Eileen Wonders, and was Grand Marshal for WGM Aileen Hedlund. She was of course my escort in 1991-92-93, and in my appointment on the General Grand Chapter ESTARL Committee.

At the present time she was a member of Juanita Chapter in Des Moines and Fern Chapter in Tacoma and an Honorary member of several other Chapters.

Frances dearly loved our Eastern Star and it’s members, and I would like to thank the many Sisters and Brothers who sent her loving and encouraging cards during her illness.

2010 - Aug 30 - OV Everett and Alderwood

The evening started with a delicious pot luck dinner provided by both Chapters.  Then (Unofficial count) 134 members packed the Chapter room as Everett and Alderwood Chapters welcomed WGM Linda and WGP Dick for their official visit.

Everett's WM Mary Lee Tucker and WP Robert King welcomed everyone and lead their officers through opening and introductions.  Then Alderwood's WM Janet Busby and WP Tom Busby took over and lead their officers through the Golden Chain and closing.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed delicious refreshments in the dining room.

2010 - Aug 20 - OV Magnolia & Victory

(Unofficial count) 96 members gathered in Millwood for the official visit of WGM Linda and WGP Dick at Victory and Magnolia Chapters

WM Chris Bippes and WP John Chamberlain of Magnolia did a great job of leading their officers through opening and introductions, then WM Jennie Palmer and WP Jim Palmer and their officers showed us how well Victory Chapter does the Golden Chain. 

The Grand Officers were out in force to support the two Chapters.

Afterwards we enjoyed delicious refreshments downstairs.  The next day, most of us came back for Magnolia's delicious fundraising breakfast.

2010 - Aug 21 - OV Pine Tree

Over 75 members traveled to Kettle Falls for the Official Visit of WGM Linda with WGP Dick.  It was a beautiful, warm day.

The Grand Officers were very pleased to be there to help celebrate.

WM Nancy Breza and WP Tom Scales did a great job of leading their members throught the opening and introductions and the Chapter had a very cute addenda for the WGM and WGP.  Afterwards everyone gathered in Chewelah at the Breza's for a delicious barbecue.

2010 Golf Tournament Results!

The 10th annual OES Charity Golf Tournament was held on August 13, 2010 at Whispering Firs Golf Course, McChord AFB, Washington. The tournament supported the OES Scholarship Fund and Tacoma Valley Rite Care Program which supports the Children’s Therapy Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington. Approximately $4,800 will be donated to these charities.

Fifteen teams competed – 6 mens teams and 9 mixed teams. A total of 57 golfers participated and 40 additional members and friends attended the festivities after the tournament. 43 Chapters, businesses and individuals sponsored the tournament for a total $3,075.00. A raffle was held after the tournament which included several hotel stays, rounds of golf, dinners and services. We thank all the chapters, individuals and businesses for their support. Water was donated by Pepsi, pies by Shari’s and doughnuts by Krispy Kreme.

A special thank you to Darlene Wiggins, Margie Bunge, Ann Gates, Sandy Henry, Janet Sebastian, Lillian Gallion, Bill Davis, Robin Erickson, Michelle Burlison, Mary Ellen Sparks, Clayton Sparks, Linda Miller, Laura Thomas and Cindy Sims who helped to make this tournament a success. Without their assistance, we could not have had such a great day.

Something unique happened during our tournament. Ken Hayes got a “hole in one” on the 12th hole. This is something that all golfers hope for but many never attain. We congratulate Ken on his achievement.

The 11th Annual Tournament will be scheduled for the 2nd Friday of August 2011 – mark your calendar now and join us. We are looking at changing the format to 2-person teams – Hopefully, this will allow more people to play along with making the play a little faster. Plan to join us!!

2010 - Aug 17 - OV Fern & Lewis

(unofficial count) 106 members cooled off in the wonderfully air conditioned Chapter room as Fern and Lewis Chapters welcomed WGM Linda with WGP Dick for the official visit.

WM Linda Polly and WP PT Stan Cybulski lead their officers through opening and introductions and she let us know of some odd illegalities in other states.   Then WM Marjorie Kay kept WP PT Stan busy as their officers performed the Golden Chain and closing.

The room was very full and everyone enjoyed sharing the evening with the mother and daughter chapters.

The Grand Officers were pleased to attend and enjoyed the Hawaiian dress code.

Afterwards there were wonderful goodies in the dining room before we all headed home - through a massive traffic jam for those of us heading north on I-5.

2010 - Aug 16, OV Cedar & Tacoma

(Unofficial count) 116 members braved the traffic to join Cedar and Tacoma Chapters for the official visit of WGM Linda Runyan with WGP Dick Weigel and the Starlight Grand Family.  We enjoyed a delicious dinner for a donation ahead of the meeting.

WM Irene Jacobs and WP Gary Jacobs of Cedar Chapter did a great job of leading their officers through opening and introductions.  Then WM Charlotte Miller and WP Bill Miller and their officers did a lovely job of the Golden Chain and closing.

WM Linda's speech was a wonderful reminder of how important the Ronald McDonald house is to the families that use it and why we need to save our pop tabs to help support it.

After the meeting we enjoyed delicious refreshments in the dining room.

2010 - Aug 15 - Rainbow Dream Camp

There was a great OES contingent at Rainbow Dream Camp on Sunday to enjoy the delicious breakfast (they served over 340 and made over $1,000). 

It was Harry Potter heaven there and everyone was into the spirit of the theme.

The weather was hot, but the friendship was warm and everyone had a great time.  The worship service and the OV were beautifully done and the girls are going to have lots of fun this year.

The penguins are waddling through the year with WGA Kristina and it looks like everything will be very cool.

GWAA Ashley did a great job with Dream Camp and we commend all her efforts.  We're looking forward to seeing what Jordin will do next year as we go tropical.

2010 - Aug 13 - OES Golf Tournament

What a fun and beautiful day it was on Friday the 13th at the Whispering Firs Golf Club at McChord.  Many brave souls actually played golf while the rest of us did the hard work of sitting around, socializing and riding the beer cart!  Wheeeeeeee!

The company was splendid and the weather delightful.

Dinner was delicious and then our superb chairpersons - Alice and Bill Hammontree - did a great job of presenting all the awards and handing out the raffle prizes. 

Other people took more and much better pictures and hopefully they will send a few for posting.  It was lots of fun and when we find out the totals raised for the charities, we'll let you know.

2001 - Aug 6 - OV Montesano and Pacific

(Unofficial count) 110 members traveled to Montesano for the official visit of WGM Linda with WGP Dick and the Starlight Grand Family.  It started with a delicious dinner and then we celebrated being out of the massive traffic jams all over the west side of the state by putting on our masks and having a ball.

WM Barbara Russell with WP Mark Russell of Montesano did a great job of leading their officers in opening and introductions.  Then WM Donna Moody and WP Les Moore of Pacific Chapter took over and lead their officers through the Golden Chain. 

All of the officers did a great job and everyone had a wonderful time.

Under good of the order, we were treated to a fairy tale with WGM Linda as Cinderella and WGP Dick as the Prince.  She was wheeled into the room in a beautiful "carriage" that looked suspiciously like a dolled up wheel chair.  It was preceeded by two noble steeds that had to use a walker to get around.  However, after being escorted throught each Star point and given appropriate advice, she got to dance with her handsome prince - until the clock struck midnight and she was wheeled out with the horses leaving little reminders of thier presence.  But, not to worry - they had a clean up crew ready.

All in all, it was a very fun and happy evening. 

We look forward to seeing everyone at the golf tournament or at the next OV for Cedar and Tacoma Chapters on Monday, August 16th!  Then on Tuesday the 17th it's the ov of Fern and Lewis chapters.

2010 - Aug 2 - OV & 100th Anniversary of Floral Chapter

(Unofficial Count) 107 members gathered in Monroe to celebrate the official visit of WGM Linda Runyan and the Starlight Grand Family and also the 100th anniversary of Floral Chapter.

WM Valerie Hoffmeister and WP Bill Wade did a great job of leading their officers through the opening and introductions.

The Grand Officers were out in force to support the Chapter.

There was lots of entertainment, starting with that infamous bag lady who occasionally wanders into our Chapter rooms to make fun of us. 

She was definitely overdressed for the warmth of the Chapter room.

But she found her "Santa" in AP Bob Gates!

After she finally decided to head for greener pastures, we were treated to a fascinating history of the Chapter written by Lila Estes and presented by Inga Opitz. 

During her response, WGM Linda announced that Doris Jellinek had been named a Special Angel for Floral Chapter.  She and the other Chapter Special Angels will be honored at Grand Chapter next June.

After the meeting, we enjoyed delicious refreshments downstairs before heading home.  It was a lovely evening and everyone had a great time. 

The next OV will be at Montesano this coming Friday, August 6th at 7:30 pm.  Please come out and support the Chapters.   Let's fill up the room!

2010 - August 1 - Grand Reps Club Picnic

The Grand Representatives Club of Western Washington held their annual picnic at Borst Park in Centralia.  It's a wonderful place, with an indoor area with a kitchen big enough to hold quite a crowd  - and there were about 55 of us there. 

The members of the club provided a delicous potluck dinner.

If you went away hungry it was your own fault.

The room was full of happiness and warmth as the Grand Representatives - current and former - greeted their guests - the Starlight Grand Family.

Everyone had a great time and enjoyed visiting with all their wonderful friends.

July 31, 2010 - First Official Visit

(Unofficial Count) 165 members went to Sunnyside as the first Official Visit of WGM Linda Runyan with WGP Dick Weigel and the Starlight Grand Family was held at the Sunnyside Masonic Center.

WM Becky Goddard and WP Nick Goddard of Evergreen Chapter did a great job of leading their officers in opening the Chapter.  Then WM Sandee Hodkinson and WP John Hodkinson of Illihee Chapter took over and took us through introductions.  WM Syrita Lockhart and WP Walter Lockhart of Sunnyside lead their officers through the Golden Chain and took us the rest of the way to closing.

There was a great turnout of officers and members from all 3 Chapters plus packed sidelines.  It was warm in the room, and not just because of the heat. 

After the meeting, we all enjoyed delicious cookies in the dining room.  It was a great way to start the new Grand Chapter year.

Bob Miles Funeral Service

The funeral service for Robert "Bob" Miles will be Saturday, August 14th at 1:00 PM at the Floral Hill Cemetery, 409 Filbert Rd, Lynnwood 98036. (196th Street turns into Filbert Road and the cemetery is at the Filbert Rd and North Rd intersection.)

I received word that  Bob Miles passed away this afternoon in the hospital. He has been on dialysis for some time.  Bob was a Past Patron of Alderwood and Floral Chapters, former Grand Representative of Kansas and escort to his wife Donna who was the Grand Warder for PGM Bev Haave and PGP John Grobler.

More Sad News

It is with much sadness to inform you that Blanche Herron Chambers, our Senior Past Grand Matron passed away on Monday, July 26th after struggling the last few days with heart failure and shutdown of her kidneys. Her family was with her throughout the last few days including her daughter, son, grandson and great-grandson. Although sleeping most of the time, Blanche held on as long as she could and once upon awaking yesterday, ever so slightly she told her daughter Virginia “I’m trying”. It is believed she was trying to make it to her 100th birthday in November, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

Blanche’s Services will be Monday, August 2nd, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Walla Walla and the graveside service will in Pomeroy at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, followed by a light lunch and social gathering at the St. Peters Episcopal Church Parish Hall.

Grand Chapter Quilt Wall Hangings

Dee Roth has posted a wonderful collection of the quilted wall hangings on her Facebook album.  According to Irene Jacobs, they raised $3,500 for our charities from the sale of the wall hangings.  Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on this wonderful project and thank you to Dee for posting the pictures.

94th Birthday!!!

I just got a voice mail from Dianna Kaspar: last night at Grand Assembly, Joanne Bornstine retired as Grand Deputy of District 8, IORG, Washington, and 5 minutes later at Grand Appointments, Barbara Brown appointed Joanne as State Mother Advisor!!! Joanne thought she was "retiring", however she's now representing the state of Washington Rainbow Girls as "MOM"!!! Installation is taking place right now at the Sun Dome in Yakima!!!

Plus, Dan Voorhees is State Rainbow Dad!!

Congratulations Joanne!! Looks like I'll be changing your title under Good of the Order for Introductions!!!

Great news!

The news comes from several sources that Dan Voorhees was announced as State Rainbow Dad for WA/ID Intl Order of Rainbow for Girls at Grand Assembly last night!

CORE for Washington

Congratulations to the 150 Charter Members that joined the CORE for Washington at Grand Chapter. The purpose of the club is purely social enjoyment and the benefit of its members. It is the FUN part of our participation at General Grand Chapter. None of the money is to benefit the GGC Session in 2015. The club may also help in providing gifts to visiting dignitaries, and assist at banquets and other events whenever possible or requested to do so. It truly is the FUN part of General Grand Chapter.

Membership is still available although all Charter Memberships have been awarded. The registration form is posted on this blog site. I look forward to signing everyone up and having a loads of fun. I will be sending e-mails and updates on the blog to keep you all informed of our activities. Watch us grow!! Become a member and join the fun!

One of the pages put my gift from the Jr Past Grand Warder and several cards/invitations for Alice & Betty Hughes in one of the dressing rooms right after the installation.. When we went back after installation to change they were no where to be found. Did someone maybe pick them up for us? If so, we would appreciate it if you would  let us know. Thank you so much.

I left a bag with two shoe boxes and shoes back by the proxies table at grand chapter. They are Becky's shoes, so I am definitely in the dog house. I am hoping that some one might have picked the bag up, maybe from credentials or decorations when they went back there. Please contact me if you know where her shoes are.

Pictures
Dan and Vicki Voorhees took hundreds of pictures at Grand Chapter and I was too excited to take any, so they have promised to put some albums on the web for your viewing pleasure and I will link to those when they are ready.  In the meantime, if you want to purchase all the pictures from the session, they are available on a CD for $75.  If you want to purchase all the pictures from the installation, they are available on a CD for $25.  If you just want to purchase some individual pictures, you'll have to wait until the albums are published to make your picks.  You can contact Dan and Vicki for more information or to purchase any of their excellent pictures.

Sunday
I had the honor of attending the Deputy Instruction class at Toppenish and watching our new Sparkler Deputies go through their paces under the tutelage of their Chairmen - Gini Dryer-Dow and Pamala Marrs.   Looks like we will have a great group and everyone had a great time learning some new things and getting to know each other.  After an excellent lunch provided by the members of Illihee Chapter, all the non-deputies ventured off to either register, participate in ritual competition, or just visit with friends.

Sunday evening - Gala
The ballroom of the Clarion was packed to capacity on Sunday evening as all those who got reservations in early gathered for a barn raising.  We started with an hour of socializing, hugging and general happiness.  Then our hostess for the evening, PGM Ann Gates directed us to two buffet lines with delicious food.  There was something for everyone.

After dinner and some introductions, we were treated to some delightful and very funny entertainment by PGM Lucy and Jim Miller of Idaho.  To top off the evening, Grand Electa Bev Baller announced that her daughter Melanie Loughmiller had been appointed as the new Grand Representative of Louisiana in Washington.  What a thrill for Sister Bev and for Mel.  It was a wonderful evening filled with friendship and fun.

Monday
Monday morning was filled with breakfasts for the 2009-10 WMs and WPs and the Chapter Secretaries and Treasurers.  The rest of us finished registering and getting our credentials and checking out the amazing wall hangings made by the Chapters for the silent auction.  The auction raised $3,500!  Well done!  We also enjoyed the wonderful decorations from Irene Jacobs and her many little elves. 

The Past Deputies enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Clarion hosted by the Maplette Deputies and everyone else got ready for the informal opening. 

The Magic Bus started its journey around the Grand Chapter room and then one of the highlights of Grand Chapter was seeing PGM June Lee and PGP Paul Runyan escorted to the east.  Sister June received a standing ovation and everyone was thrilled to hear that wonderful, "HELLO".  We are so blessed to have her in our midst and she is living proof of the power of prayer. 

We were treated to welcomes from all the Yakima entities prior to the presentation of the Eastern Star Scholarship Fund awards by Darlene Wiggins, and the Alexandra Schencking Nurshing Scholarship awards by Laura Vogel.  There was also a presentation of the funds collected for the WGP's Project - ALS.

The ESTARL service was lovely and very meaningful, and then the Masonic Leaders were introduced beginning with our wonderful youth groups, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, International Order of Job's Daughters and the Washington State Order of the DeMolay.  It was an honor to have them and the other Masonic concordant organizations with us in Yakima.  We value our relationships with all of them and were pleased to have them at our Grand Chapter.

We were also all very excited when WGM Marge and WGP Dennis called Carole Fisher from Grand Coulee Dam Chapter to the Grand East and announced she was the new Grand Representative of  Tennessee in Washington.  It was just in time for her to march in the Parade of Flags.  What a great appointment.

Monday Evening
The evening started with banquets for the Past Grand Matrons and Past Grand Patrons and another for the current and former Grand Representatives.  Janie Larson and Lilynne Davis performed at the USO Lounge and then the Magic Bus took off again to get us started. 

The Monarch Grand Family presented the Bible and Emblems to start the evening.  Grand Marshal Peggy Mills then escorted PGM Marilyn Hoots and PGP Al Butterfield into the Grand Chapter room to open the session.  The Grand Officers looked wonderful in their lavender forever dresses.  Louise Belsby reported 95 of the 95 Chapters in our grand jurisdiction were represented and then we had the presentations of the US, Canadian, Christian, Eastern Star, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Ohio, Texas, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and West Virginia flags with fitting tributes to each.

Our Distinguished Guests - through Grand Officers Emeritus were presented and then the Grand Representatives of Washington and other jurisdictioins joined in the Parade of Flags.  Finally the Dresden Star Deputies were escorted and Grand Chapter recessed for the evening.

Tuesday Morning
The Magic Bus went around the Grand Chapter room picking up more passengers as the Tuesday morning session got under way.  PGM Kit Wells and PGP J. Paul Fitzsimmons opened the session and then we got down to business.  The candidates for office were presented in the East, and Chuck Aldrich, Teller Chairman, gave instructions for voting.   Since there was only one candidate for WGM, WGP. AGM, AGP, Gr. Sec., Gr. Treas, and Gr. Cond., The Grand Secretary cast an elective ballot for each after which the first ballot for Associate Grand Conductress and Grand Sentinel was taken.  The Credentials Committee reported a total of 1014 votes available including proxies.

Committees started reporting and then the Resolutions were presented for discussion and voting.  This is not in the order discussed, but here are the results of the Resolutions:

Grand Sentinel - 940 votes cast - 470 required to win
Bob Breza was also thrilled to accept and now sister Gerry has her partner for the next 3 years and beyond.

Tuesday Afternoon
The afternoon started with the entrance of PGM Joanne Clark and PGP Terry Wiggins to open the session.  At 2 pm, PGP Al Butterfield, Chairman of the Eastern Star Charities Foundation did a great job of conducting the annual meeting of the Foundation and keeping us all informed of their activitiy and progress.  After this the Standard Works committee presented the proposed revisions to the Book of Instruction for the vote of the members.  Results were as follows:

Tuesday Evening
After the Magic Bus gathered up a few more members, PGM Gerry Shafer and PGP Bill Hammontree called the session to order.  We heard messages from our GGC Committee members Gerry Shafer and Brian Gross and from our own John Grobler, Right Worthy Associate Grand Patron and his partner Bobbi White, Right Worthy Associate Grand Matron. 

Helen Mount of Afton Chapter reported for the Necrology Committee after which a truly beautiful and very moving Grand Memorial arranged by Grand Chaplain John Chamberlain and written by Rose Gross was given with the participation of the members of El Katif Shrine in Spokane.  There were very few dry eyes in the Grand Chapter room and it was a wonderful tribute to our Eastern Star sisters and brothers who have passed on before us.

Wednesday Morning
After the Magic Bus picked up a few more visitors, PGM Marjoe Richards and PGP Phil Green welcomed everyone to the Wednesday morning session.  WGP Dennis did a great job of taking care of the rest of the business and they gave the results of the Ritual Competition and just after 10 am, WGM Marge welcomed all of our distinguished 50 year members. 

The 2009-10 Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons were presented and then we recessed for the afternoon. 

Wednesday Afternoon
The Magic Bus gathered up the American Emerald Grand Family and took them for one last spin around the Grand Chapter room.  The PGM Diane Osborne and PGP Roy Sharp welcomed everyone to the last session of the 2010 Grand Chapter.  After presentation of all the people who helped make Grand Chapter possible and the Grand Escorts of the American Emerald Grand Family, WGM Marge and WGP Dennis and the Grand Officers retired their badges.

After the address of the new WGM and WGP, Most Worshipful Grand Master Santy Lascano gave a very inspiring address to the audience.  Then the Galaxy Escorts were presented, followed by the Comet Grand Representatives, Sparkler Deputy Instructors, and 2010-11 Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons.  Just before closing WGM Linda and WGP Dick presented the commission of Grand Representative of West Virginia to Patricia McKinley from Martha Chapter in Cheney.  After the Bible signing ceremony, retiring march and receptions line, we all went to either dinner or home - exhausted but happy to have shared another wonderful Grand Chapter with our friends.

Three New Grand Representatives

Grand Electa, Bev Baller presented at the Gala Dinner on Sunday (June 27^th) in Yakima the commission of Grand Representative of Louisiana to Melanie Loughmiller from Maple Leaf Chapter. Melanie is listed as Conductress of the chapter in the 2009-10 Blue Book.

WGM Marge Ramsdell presented during the Monday (June 28^th) afternoon session of Grand Chapter in Yakima the commission of Grand Representative of Tennessee to Carole Fisher from Grand Coulee Dam Chapter. Carole is listed as Conductress of the chapter in the 2009-10 Blue Book.   

WGM Linda Runyan and WGP Dick Weigel presented at the conclusion of Installation on Wednesday (June 30^th) afternoon the commission of Grand Representative of West Virginia to Patricia McKinley from Martha Chapter in Cheney. Patricia is listed as Secretary of the chapter in the 2009-10 Blue Book.
