2010 - 09-25 Reception for AGM Gloria Schwartz and AGP Frank Pascoe

The Chapter room at West Seattle was absolutely packed as Crystal, Belfair, Afton and Bethel Chapters honored Associate Grand Matron Gloria Schwartz and Associate Grand Patron Frank Pascoe.

All four chapters turned out in force to support Gloria and Frank.

The Starlight Grand Family was proud to be part of their special day.

At the luncheon, Betty Hughes and Ken Taylor roasted LaNita Pascoe and Don Schwartz and did a great job of it.

At the reception, PGM Diane Osborne and Stephanie Hoye, accompanied by Pamela Lee, introduced Gloria and Frank's songs - One Day at a Time and Happy Trails.  The mystery speakers were Helen Collins for Gloria and Harold Hill for Frank and they both did a great job.

It was a wonderful afternoon filled with laughter, fun and friendship.

Thank you!

To our Sisters and Brothers of the Grand Chapter of Washington – Thank you so very much for the many cards, calls and words of encouragement at the passing of my mother.  She truly was a special person and loved her association with you.  I appreciate all the kindnesses you have shown her over the years.  Your words of comfort have helped during this sad time.

Thank you again.

My Dear Sisters and Brothers:

This is difficult for me to write and I do so with a heavy heart. However you are my Fraternal Family and I want to tell you personally via this email I have been diagnosed with Lung Cancer, which has spread to the Liver.

As you know I came home from the Northwest States tour with Pneumonia. This drained me. In the process of checks and x rays, which showed a gradual improvement, a Radiologist detected something suspicious.

Thus began a series of testing x rays, CT scans Ultra Sounds, biopsies and meetings with Medical teams. In the past week it has been determined that Radiation will not be an option. But if, with the build up of my immune system through Steroids and I choose a Chemo treatment will be started. This will be a treatment twice (2) a month for 4 months, if my system can tolerate it. I feel a bit better today than yesterday or the day before-- perhaps knowing helps

I have chosen not to release this, except to my Family, until I knew what I had and what I was facing so the rumor mill would not run rampant. After my Family you are my Fraternal Family and I need to let you know.

Letter from our Worthy Grand Matron –
August 2010

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

In the effort to raise money for the Worthy Grand Matron’s and the Worthy Grand Patron’s projects this year, we are having a special fund raiser in the form of a quilt raffle in which every member will have an opportunity to share.

Every chapter that donates $25 will have its name on the quilt. Every member will also have the opportunity to purchase a place for their name at $5 each, and every $5 purchase will entitle them to a raffle ticket for a chance to win the quilt. No one's name will be put on the quilt more than once, but individuals may purchase more than one ticket and thus increase their chances to win the quilt.

If a person desires to purchase more chances on the quilt, they can either chose the name of some other member who is special to them to add to the quilt or they may simply purchase more tickets without adding any names. We will keep a database of all the names to be listed so that none should be duplicated.

The Sparkler Deputy Instructors will have tickets to sell and will take the names of all the Chapters and individual names to be turned in for the quilt.

The most important part of this endeavor is that the membership will have the opportunity to contribute very generously and positively in our efforts towards Cancer Research and Diabetes Research.

Sisters and brothers, I challenge you to see just how many names we can add to this quilt.

The absolute deadline for all names to be added to the quilt will be February 15, 2010, so please make your ticket purchases and chapter donations promptly to enable the quilt to be finished with as many names as possible.

Let’s all of us do what we are able to do in fighting Cancer and Diabetes.

Fraternally,
Linda Runyan, WGM

The Place to Be!!!

The Associate Grand Conductress is going GR hunting this Thursday, Sept 16th. Her guide says the best game is found by heading way far south on I-5, then heading a few miles east. Will she find her elusive prey? Or, will she lack a mass of hunting ability? Laughter could ensue!

Sad News

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that George Mauel of Centralia Chapter passed away last night (9-9). He was a fantastic escort for his wife, Leora, Grand Martha, during the Portrait Grand year. They both had a connection to my parents for many years. George has not been well for awhile. I know he is now in a better place.
Please keep Leora and their daughters, Lora & Georgia and the rest of the family in your prayers.
Cards may be sent to: Leora Mauel & family, 1914 Sandra Ave, Centralia WA 98531-9379.

Sad News - Passing of Frances Gottner

My dearest Frances passed-on this morning, Labor Day 9/6/10. She died peacefully without pain. We met in high school in Santa Monica, California and were married on October 17, 1947. We were initiated together into Eastern Star in La Sierra Chapter in Fresno, Calif, in February 1966. Sister Frances and I served together twice in the East in Omega Chapter in Des Moines, WA. in 1978 -1979 and 1988 -1989.

She gave me outstanding support as we traveled for several years with the Grand Lodge team all over Washington, and she assisted the wives of two Grand Masters by leading the indoctrination sessions for the ladies of the Grand Lodge teams for those two years

She served as a Deputy Instructor for WGM Loretta Ketner, Westside Chairman of the Deputies for WGM Eileen Wonders, and was Grand Marshal for WGM Aileen Hedlund. She was of course my escort in 1991-92-93, and in my appointment on the General Grand Chapter ESTARL Committee.

At the present time she was a member of Juanita Chapter in Des Moines and Fern Chapter in Tacoma and an Honorary member of several other Chapters.

Frances dearly loved our Eastern Star and it’s members, and I would like to thank the many Sisters and Brothers who sent her loving and encouraging cards during her illness.
